I’ve been training new phlebotomists and I want to share some insights on enhancing venipuncture skills. One technique that has really helped is using a warm compress before needle insertion, which can make the veins more visible and less fortuitous. I’d love to hear about what techniques others have found useful in their own training or daily practice.
Using a tourniquet for a short duration really helps with visibility too — have you noticed how much it can affect first-stick success? @OP.
I totally get your point about the warm compress — it really does help! One thing I’ve found is that even using a heat pack for just a minute or two can make a world of difference. But I’ve also noticed that sometimes, the compression doesn’t work as well on certain patients; you’ve got to adapt my technique on the fly, which can be a bit frustrating. @asanchez81, have you tried that method?
