I’ve noticed that many new phlebotomists struggle with making patients feel at ease before a draw… One technique I find helpful is to ask open-ended questions to engage the patient in conversation, which can often distract them from any anxiety. Building rapport not only helps the patient but can also make our jobs a lot smoother. Anyone have other tips for enhancing patient interactions?
I totally agree about engaging patients! I often share a little joke to lighten the mood, like, ‘Don’t worry, I promise this isn’t as bad as a root canal!’ Also, I find that showing them the needle before starting helps reduce the fear factor. It’s all about building that trust.
But i find that using a gentle tone can really help… Once, I had a patient who was super nervous, and just saying, ‘You’re doing great, we’ll be done in a second,’ really seemed to ease her tension. What’s your go-to phrase when someone seems anxious?
