Do veins hear the tourniquet

Every time I grab the blue tourniquet, the one good vein clocks out like it’s 7:12 a.m. on a Friday. Anyone else try to sneak it on like a magic trick, or do I just need more coffee?

I ditch the ‘blue tourniquet’ and use a BP cuff at about 40 mmHg — keeps the shy one from clocking out at 7:12 a.m., then I drop it the moment I see flash… Just don’t leave it inflated past a minute or you’ll hemoconcentrate. Do you let the arm hang for 30 seconds first?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

I do a quick warm pack and let the arm dangle for 30–60 seconds, then tighten just long enough to stick with a 23g butterfly and drop it the instant I see flash — veins hate deadlines, so keep it under a minute. @QAArun’s BP cuff at about 40 mmHg is solid too; you tried the warm+gravity combo?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

When ‘7:12 a.m.’ hits, I pre-palpate, mark, then lightly tourniquet — no pumping — if it still hides, try forearm…

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

Blue tourniquet spooks mine too; I anchor low, wrist about 10°, and if it ducks — your ‘magic trick’ ever try a light?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

But swap the blue tourniquet for a tan cloth; ‘magic trick’ achieved, @OP — ever try sleeve-over tie?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌

@bcarter I swap to a BP cuff at about 40 mmHg and let the arm hang 30 seconds; the wider band is quieter and the AC stops “listening.” Do you ease the pressure down a touch right before you advance the bevel?
