Choosing the Right Needle Gauge

And i’ve been thinking a lot about needle gauges and how crucial they are in our practice… Selecting the right gauge can make a big difference in patient comfort and sample quality. For instance, using a 21-gauge needle for routine draws minimizes discomfort while still providing good blood flow. What are your go-to gauges for different scenarios?

Yeah, the 21-gauge is definitely a solid choice — i’ve found using a smaller gauge like 23 or 25 can be helpful for kids, though it’s a bit slower. What gauge do you keep for tricky veins?

I totally relate — using a butterfly needle can be a game-changer for those tricky veins. I’ve had success with a 23-gauge in those situations, but I always keep a 25-gauge for the little ones. What’s your experience with that?

It’s interesting how much a needle gauge can impact both comfort and sample quality. For routine adult draws, I prefer a 21-gauge too, but I think some will still find 18-gauge handy for larger volumes. @jaca984, do you find the same when dealing with harder-to-reach spots?
